The Learning Gateway at the Carlisle campus is the focus for the College's flexible and distributed learning aspirations, bringing together a completely new community of learners with different support needs. The Learning Gateway is different from other College buildings. It will bring together learners, tutors and support professionals in ways that foster truly independent learning, working in partnership, enabled by state of the art ICT facilities.
The aim is to provide complete flexibility to learners and tutors so that the space can be adapted to a variety of learning needs by either group. It combines social and informal space with flexi-rooms that can be configured in a variety of formations.
Margaret Weaver, Head of Learning and Information Services at St Martin's College comments The brief to our suppliers was A train journey through Cumbria theme. They worked with this vision and came up with designs and layouts that would accommodate flexible working, combining social and informal spaces with adaptable furnishings and ICT facilities. Desk Centre advised the Project Team enabling the unique features of the Gateway to be created. I don't think they'd had such an unusual request before, but they liaised closely with us and with the Architect to make sure we got the solution we wanted. The results speak for themselves
The ground floor is furnished in earthy terracotta colours, the 1st floor in the greens of the hills and vegetation and the top floor in the more ethereal blues of the air and sky.
On the ground floor there is soft seating and curved meeting pods, while on the 1st floor snaking team desking encourages small group working and on the 2nd floor semi-circular study carousels are designed for individual study.
Michael Higham Area Sales Manager for Desk Centre comments, We worked for numerous months with the College and Architect, and I believe we all have created a truly outstanding Flagship for the College that will serve the students for years to come
